ARTISTS INSPIRE ACTION FOR 'REMEMBER NATURE' CAMPAIGN
The Tate Modern in London and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead were among 16 galleries and cultural spaces across England who hosted a day of artist-led action on 4th November 2025, calling on audiences to urgently 'Remember Nature'.
'Remember Nature 2025' is a new staging of the visionary art project initiated on 4th November 2015 by the celebrated artist Gustav Metzger (1926-2017) realising Metzger's hope and belief in the future power of art to halt universal extinction. He said at the time "Our task is to remind people of the richness and complexity in nature ... and by doing so art will enter territories that are inherently creative."
The artistic creations and nature inventions took place in galleries, cultural venues and outdoor spaces across the length and breadth of the country, driving collective action to stand up for the planet. From an online planetary prayer at the Serpentine to the planting of an apple orchard by the children at two primary schools organised with The Turner Gallery, Margate, each lead artist who coordinated a place-specific 'Day of Action' also produced a 'call to action' film. These were then screened online and at Tate Modern's Starr Cinema and you can watch them HERE. More information on the actual events can be found HERE.
The exhibition was curated with Metzger's original collaborators Andrea Gregson and Jo Joelson and 16 regional art partners across England: Art Gene, Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, CAST, Castlefield Gallery, De La Warr Pavilion, FACT, Hatton Gallery, Hauser & Wirth, Homotopia, Ikon Gallery, KARST, Kestle Barton, Kettle's Yard, MIMA, Serpentine Galleries, Tate Modern and Turner Contemporary. Jo Joelson said "We wanted to offer something compelling and empowering rather than doomy and gloomy, which we're bombarded with all the time. We can't live our lives in darkness, so let's use his mantra instead: go forwards, with hope!"
To mark the event, a series of posters by leading artists was commissioned with a proportion of proceeds from the sale being donated to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). The posters, costing £30 each can be purchased HERE.
