EARTHSHOT ROLLS OUT THE GREEN CARPET TO WINNERS IN RIO
Last night, 5th November 2025, winners of Prince William's prestigious and impactful Earthshot Prize were announced at a star-studded ceremony at the iconic Museum of Tomorrow in Rio De Janiero, Brazil.
This year, nearly 2,500 nominees were submitted with the support of 575 nominators. All 15 finalists, who were joined on the night by celebrities such as Kylie Minogue and Shaun Mendes, Olympian Rebeca Andrade, former New Zealand PM Jacinda Ardern, F1 driver Sebastian Vettel and many others, were each asked to wear previously worn outfits or those made from recycled materials to the awards.
The five overall 2025 Winners of The Earthshot Prize, each awarded £1million to advance or replicate their work are as follows:
- Protect and Restore Nature: re.green Brazil who are protecting one of the world's most important ecosystems and making it financially viable
- Clean Our Air: The City of Bogota,Colombia who have shown how public policy and action such as clean air zones can bring lasting change.
- Revive Our Oceans: The High Seas Treaty, Global. This worldwide ocean initiative that will go into effect from January 2026 sets out clear measures to conserve life in and around our seas.
- Build a Waste-Free World: Lagos Fashion Week, Nigeria which is redefining the industry, with each participating designer required to show their commitment to sustainable practice.
- Fix Our Climate: Friendship, Bangladesh who use integrated public services, health and education solutions to help vulnerable communities in a multitude of ways in preparing for natural disasters and helping them survive and thrive afterwards.
The 15 finalists and five winners were selected by Prince William, and the Earthshot Prize Council, chaired by Dame Christiana Figueres and including Her Majesty Queen Rania Al Abdullah, Jose Andres, Sir David Attenborough, Cate Blanchett, Ernest Gibson, Hindou Oumarou Ibrahim, Wanjira Mathai, Nemonte Nenquimo, Luisa Neubauer, Indra Nooyi, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Naoko Yamazaki and Gisele Bundchen.
They will all take part on a year-long Finalist Programme where they receive mentorship, international visibility, pro-bono legal support, strategic digital and communications advice, and training designed to help accelerate progress and maximise impact. Their support also includes access to the Prize's ambitious global network of businesses, philanthropists, investors and environmental organisations committed to climate action.
The Prince of Wales, who founded the global environmental award in 2020 to challenge our generation to come up with groundbreaking solutions to fix our planet and will be attending COP 30, also in Brazil next week, said the winners were an "inspiration that give us courage" and "proof that progress is possible."
The evening was broadcast to an audience of 34 million people in Brazil and the UK, with broadcast partners BBC and will be streamed on BBC iPlayer from 8th November 2025.
