HELP THE CANAL & RIVER TRUST WITH THEIR NEW HABITAT SURVEY

The Canal & River Trust are the charity who look after 2,000 miles of waterways, transforming canals and rivers into connecting habitats for wildlife and biodiversity and improving spaces where local people want to spend time and can benefit from a sense of well-being.

The dwindling numbers of our wildlife (41% in decline across the UK) are due to severe loss of habitat caused by a change of land use and climate change but the natural environments around our canals and rivers are surprisingly diverse. They create valuable green corridors in the heart of countryside as well as towns and cities and can offer nature a sanctuary with a mix of different homes by the water.

The Trust have just launched a 'Spot that Habitat' citizen science project by calling on volunteers who live near a local canal, to pop down and identify any of the six types of habitat that provide a home for nature so that they can protect them. By sharing with them the places where wildlife are currently living or would want to live (waterway banks, hedgerows, grassland, scrubland, buildings/bridges/locks /walls and open water) you can also enter their Drifters prize draw to win a canal boat holiday voucher worth £800. The opening date for entries is 12 noon on Monday 28th March 2022 and the closing date is 12 noon on Wednesday 31st August 2022.
